All of the tracks walked and described in the blog were mapped with GPS, corrected, and made into flyover tours. These conversions were done with the software GEORGET (Google Earth ORGaniser, Editor & Toolkit) which does all of the stuff that Google Earth can’t be bothered with. We’ll see about putting GEORGET up on sourceforge one day.

Classes of Tramping Inclines
GEORGET uses a particular algorithm to calculate avarage ascents and descents as a function of the distance in ascent or descent. Obviously, longer tracks with varying inclines will tend to have lower average inclines than shorter parts of the track which may be steeper sustained ascents or descents. At the lowest level, the subdivision is linear and more or less arbitrary, as it hovers around the noise level for GEORGET’s algorithm. At the higher levels, a cutoff point of 30° was chosen as being that of artificial staircases; sustained inclines above 30° involve dedicated climbing.
